THE NEED

Nearly 15 percent of households in Mecklenburg County are considered food insecure. That means they have a reduced quality and variety of diet, may eat less, and that their eating patterns are disrupted due to lack of money and resources.  Recent demographics show that 19% of the population for whom poverty status is determined in Mecklenburg County, VA (5.63k out of 29.6k people) live below the poverty line, a number that is higher than the national average of 12.3%.

WHAT IS PROVIDED?

On a monthly basis, clients receive a large box of canned meats, vegetables, pastas, peanut butter, jelly, and cereal with fresh produce, meat, and dairy as possible.  Our goal is for each monthly box to contain 40% fresh or frozen products.  In addition, clients may visit each time the Food Pantry is open to receive various miscellaneous items (bread, deli meat or cheese, pastries, frozen meat, and other items as available.)

ELIGIBILITY

Application is attached below or may be completed at the Food Pantry.

1.  At each visit to the Food Pantry, clients are asked to present a photo ID showing a current address in Clarksville, Skipwith, Boydton, Buffalo Junction, Red Oak or Nelson, Virginia.

2.  If the photo ID does not show a local address, the client must present a rent receipt or utility bill in his/her name, verifying residence in the service area.

3.  A new client will be asked to complete each question on the Food Pantry application (see attachment below).  Pages 1 and 2 are for the head of household, and pages 3 and 4 are for additional persons in the family.

4.  The client will receive a full Pantry Box the day of submission and may return each month for a similar box.  On any Wednesday or Saturday that the Pantry is open, clients may return for a few miscellaneous items, bread, and meat.
